Ann Hancox

I Ann Hancox am Wife to Vic Hancox. We were married on the 8th July 1972 after a nine Year Engagement because people didn't think folk with Disabilities should Marry.

However, as I don't conform with Society and do my own Thing which is much more fun! Vic and I did get Married with interest and support from Peter Lee, a good friend. Our Wedding day was shared with two hundred happy Family and Friends despite the pouring rain all day! I arrived at the Church too early. Brian, the Vicar asked to ride round the block. Saying I was the first Bride that he knew to have arrived too early for their Wedding.

John and Michael my Brothers and myself with our parents lived in a two Bedded flat near Godalming, Surrey for a few years. During the Holidays from Boarding School for Girls in Ely, Cambridge. I would spend the mornings at home by myself. While Mum and Dad had to go to Work to feed us and pay the Bills. This gave me the Opportunity to sort Life out in thought and work towards being Independent. The four hours slipped away quickly as I struggled to get dressed and into my Wheelchair from the bed. Then to wash and comb my hair before Mum returned from Work. There was little time to notice my Disability. My Brothers were very supportive and helped when necessary. We have a good relationship. I was, indeed fortunate to have Mary King, as my Physiotherapist at School, who believed in making me work hard to get good results. Her Attitude wasn't to dwell upon Disabilities but to enjoy Life to the full which is exactly what I do.

As a Teenager, I often got myself in trouble at School for bad behaviour! Once Miss Lake, the Head Mistress confiscated a Water pistol from me during Assembly which was embarrassing but very amusing - I thought so anyway.

Education was important as it is for everyone. I am a Writer and am a Member of the Women Writers and Journalists Society. I do write Poetry but not nearly as much as I should. I started Writing seriously when leaving School and went into residential care in Croydon. I would be in bed by 1900 hours writing letters to my family and Friends. Also I kept a five year Diary. This acted as a daily Conversation with God. Vic's and my Christian faith is the Key to our successful life together. Writing in bed leaning on my left arm was the best position for Writing. Until I saw Vic, who is now my Husband type with his head. This made me change my way from Hand Writing to using a Typewriter with two fingers. I was thrilled with this achievement as I could now stop going to bed early! One of my Interests is Letter Writing. This is a wonderful way of building of a wide Choice of friends for Life! Before marrying Vic I often enjoyed putting my Thoughts into Poetry. I could become a real Poet and maybe one day I will succeed. However, there are many things I want to do before Energy and enthusiasm runs out! Travel is my Speciality in Life.

I think this came about when I was a child and missed on going out during the School Holidays. Except on Thursday afternoons when Joyce would come to my home and take me out providing it wasn't raining. Joyce first met me at the age of Four when I attended Kinder Garden in Godalming. Joyce was a member of Staff so got to know me very well. Her Interest with me grew throughout my Childhood and she became a loyal friend. Joyce would take my shopping in Godalming and always stopping to buy a huge Meringue for Tea which spattered everywhere when taking my first bite! I still have contact with Joyce and Eileen, her Sister. Vic and I visit them for tea from time to time in the same house as when I first met them.

Vic and I travel the World when given the Opportunity. Our Disabilities take second priority and don't prevent us from enjoying Life to the full. We have visited Countries such as Hong Kong. The Holy Land. It was a privilege to be going in the Footsteps of our Lord. Switzerland is a beautiful country with mountains and clean air. I remember riding in a Cable car to the Matterhorn with ninety odd other Holiday Makers when we hit a bad Thunder Storm which stopped to my Delight! I enjoy Challenges and new Experiences. Everyone screamed with horror when the Cable car stopped a second time. I just sat and laughed at the thought of being strung in mid air. We have travelled the other side of the World to Australia. It is ideal to know friends scattered in different Countries to whom we can and stay. To celebrate the Millennium in the year 2000. Vic and I treated ourselves to a holiday for two weeks on a Cruise in the Mediterranean. The Money was left to me, Ann, from an Aunt after she died in 1999. This Cruise was a Holiday of a Life with every facility made available to ensure we enjoyed ourselves throughout the Holiday. Joan and Alan, two friends came on the Cruise with us as Helpers. They were indeed impressed with the way everything was made easy to carry out our daily tasks.

Two of my Specialities. I like meeting and socialising with people. In fact I am a Party Animal at heart! I also try getting myself involved in intelligent conversations. Although this isn't so easy these days. The Cruise was beautiful it felt as though we were living on the Planet Of "Paradise". Because everything was at our finger tips. Whatever we requested we were granted immediately. Which seemed very unusual in Vic and my situation and indeed we enjoyed this V.I.P. Treatment. Each Morning we woke up in a different Country which included Spain, France, Corsica, Italy, Malt, Majorca and Sardinia.

When touring this type of Holiday one wants to do Everything and more. For fear of not being given another opportunity in Life. I believe one should enjoy each to the full and use new Experience. The human Mind is a wonderful Creation. Unfortunately Mankind doesn't take the time to discover what the Brain is capable of doing. We prefer to do our own "Thing", without using our Minds to a greater extent. This year Vic and I have decided to tackle India for two weeks during November despite the Country not being Wheelchair friendly. This will be a Challenge to us which we shall enjoy! On the whole India is beautiful. However there is an enormous amount of poverty which is sometimes difficult to digest.
